Cub Scout fun at Smale Park 24July2015

Almost caught up.  This is Saturday, 24Jul2015.  Bug's scout pack took an urban hike in downtown Cincinnati.  We found another mustache at the park entrance.  We have one boy scout and one sister with us on the hike.
the gang with the Roebling bridge behind them. this is the prototype for the Brooklyn bridge in New York.  It was built during the civil war but not completed until after the war was over as the powers that be did not want a bridge between the North (Ohio) and the South (Kentucky).  this bridge has an open deck- no concrete and I have always called it the whistling bridge.  During the winter, it is closed because it ices over and they can not put salt on the bridge.

the park is new, and had these porch swings overlooking the river.  there are also water splash parks along the way.

We walked past the Steamboat monument and found another mustache.

Jas works right across the river.

Bug's 'stache.

We continued to walk the river front, heading into Bicentennial Commons- built for the city's 200th birthday back in 1988.  The boys found another mustache in front of the statue of Cincinnatus- the Roman general our city was named after.

There is monument to the floods in this area.  The 71.1 feet mark is from the flood in 1964, the 80.00 foot mark is from the flood in 1937 and there is evidence of a flood that reached 100 feet above the river level, but the year is not known.

at the top, sits a little ark.

the boys on the flying pig bridge.

heading back- we have walked about 1.5 miles (about 3km).  the entire walk will be 3 miles (6km)

on the way back, we stopped for play time in the big water/splash park and to have lunch.

those steps used to be accessible, and there are more wading pools up at the top.  but you cant get to them any more.

lunch on the benches, while drying off

L showing me how she can walk on the train tracks.  these tracks are only used when the circus comes to town.

the labyrinth with the bridge in the background.

the foot piano.  the boys liked this.  L was too light to get it going

the oink-o-thopter.  Bug refused to get into this, but the other kids loved it.

the other side of the bridge.

Senior Weblo Leader, Bob got the task of rocking the fly pig for the kids.

across from the flying pig is all this urban work out equipment. they all are marked "ages 13 and older".  As expected, not an older person in sight using the equipment, just all the kids.

Final stop for the urban hike, the Carousel.

Leader Bob and his wife, looking on.

My ride- the Cicada.

Final group photo of the day.  what fun.

My boy and me.  Look how tall he is now.  Pretty soon he is going to be taller than me.
