Basketball Tournament

Rocket's team is in a tournament this week and next week.  He played his first game last night.  He really likes the gym where the tournament is held, there is a upper level in the gym.
The team played hard, but they lost.  But there is a silver lining, Rocket scored a basket!
I did not get a picture of it, but he did it.  I am hoping one of the other parents got the picture.

I am really struggling with one aspect of the tournament.  The tournament is for "B" teams or lower.  But the "A" at our school is also participating.  The coach and coordinator lied about the other team and entered them as a "B" team and Rocket's team was entered as a "c" team. This is a violation of the school's code of conduct.  The other parents on our team are upset about this, we talked about it at the game, I drafted a letter to the athletic association board and sent it to the other parents so they could edit before I sent to the board.  So far every parent has indicated they don't want their names associated with it.  I am so disappointed.  What are we teaching our kids??  Do we want them to learn that lying is acceptable, that you can lie your way into a tournament, into games, etc?  Why is it acceptable for coaches to do this, when the same behavior from the kids would get them in trouble with the school and possibly removed from the team.  I don't understand it all.  This is not what I want my son to learn from sports.
This is just one thing that see as inconsistent with activities at his school.  People don't walk the talk but they act like they do.  I am so disappointed today.

We play the other team next Thursday night.  I am not looking forward to it all.  I am not looking forward to this week at all.  I am supposed to be celebrating my birthday with these parents tomorrow night and I wish I could just cancel the party right now.

I am off to have birthday dinner with my boy - today is my actual birthday.  Maybe some fun with the boy will change my mood.

Love to you,
Deb

the events of this week- ending 24Jan2016

so going back a little over a week, Rocket was in the school Spelling Bee.  He made it through 2 rounds, but went out early this year.  I am so proud of him and how much time he put into studying the words.  2 8th graders ended up having a spell off to be declared the winner.  It was a good competition.

Saturday I took rocket and the dog out for a walk.  I thought it was warmer then it was, we were dressed in jackets and it was snowing a little.
the fish pond at the park, almost frozen

Pablo was happy to be outside for a walk.

A boy and his dog walking in the woods.

Sunday, we had a basketball game, these are he OLG parents/grandparents, watching the game.

The boys getting set to play.

Monday was a school holiday and I had to work.  During the afternoon, I had a visitor to my office.  I don't think Rocket got dressed at all on Monday, he stayed in his jammies.

Pablo was happy on his doggie bed on the floor.

See, me at my desk, with my visitor. Rocket spent the morning watching TV, then he read, did homework, practiced piano and had his first Spanish lesson in the evening.

Tuesday, Rocket had school.  Then Wednesday, school was cancelled due to snow and I again had a visitor in the afternoon.  This time, Rocket decided to love on the dog after reading.

after work was done,  we had to shovel the snow. we also spent some time playing in the snow. I shoveling a path all he way down to the street in this picture, so the kids didn't have to walk in the snow in the morning or afternoon.  I also shoveled an area for us to stand at the bus stop.  I am so tired of standing in snow and having cold feet.

Thursday the kids had school and then Friday school was cancelled again due to a snow storm that was coming into the area in the afternoon.  The storm went slightly south of us, but I am not upset that school was cancelled.  I would rather the kids miss a day then have them stuck at school or on buses trying to get home.  Before Rocket came home, there was another storm like this one and I had to stay at work until 4 pm. My usual commute of 20 minutes took over 2 hours.  There were school buses that never made it to drop off kids, kids spending the night at school.  Definitely, I prefer a snow day.
So this week, Rocket went to school 2 days and was off 3 days.  The fall out from the missed days will be felt this week as homework likely doubles.  Rocket and I are both sick this weekend.  He has missed 2 basketball games, huge couching fits, very tired and chests that hurt from all the coughing.  Rocket slept most of Saturday and he did not make it through church today.

I am hoping this a better week.  Rocket has a basketball tournament game on Wednesday, we have my birthday party on Friday evening and we have the family birthday on Sunday.  It would be nice to have us both well for my birthday.

Deb

snow and more basketball

Sunday, we woke up to ice and snow.  Over near hermano's house, the ice was really bad.  We got skim coat of ice under everything due to the rain that came through before the snow.  We got just about an inch of snow.  The roads were bad enough in the morning, that we stayed home from church.  it was so nice to sleep in until 9 am.  Rocket slept until 8:30 and then he got up quietly and watched cartoons.

Pablo loves the snow the first day, but today (Monday), he does not like it because it is like ice on the back steps.
This is Pablo going out into the snow for the first time on Sunday

Rocket had his second basketball game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon.  The roads were better, but we could see the ice on road.  Monday morning, there were lots of accidents due to the ice.  The temperatures on Monday never made it above freezing.

Back to the basketball game.  Rocket's team lost.  They made the other team work for each point, but no one was making baskets for us

this is warm ups.

team huddle before the game.

Mam, Uncle Darrell and Auntie Lulu watching the game.  Above them in the stands are the other 5th grade parents.  We are a crowd.  I was doing the score book for the coaches again, it is my job and I like it.

Half time, team huddle EAGLES

Rocket was in bounding the ball again Sunday.  I like that he gets to participates in the game more this year.  He is not just a forward or a guard under the basketball.  I love his coaches this year.  I hope the coaches stay with them for the next year.

in the hallway, after the game, for debriefing.

There is more snow excepted Tuesday, which would really suck because Rocket is participating in the school Spelling Bee.  If school is cancelled, they will have to reschedule the event and I am not sure I will able to participate.  But, Rocket is hoping for a snow day and I think there is a 70-80 % chance he will have the day off.  The snow is expected right before rush hour and the temperatures are going to be below 10 degrees F (1-2 Celsius) and it will get colder through the day.

Well, rocket needs to head to bed, which means I need to go read him some books before bed.

Love and hugs,
Deb

Basketball weekend and last pack meeting for scouts

Rocket has basketball practice 2 times a week, so pictures during the week are few and far between.  I usually sit and answer work emails during practice and talk to a few other parents.

This week, he was making baskets left and right during warm ups and then when I started taking pictures, he started missing the baskets.

Friday night was the last regular pack meeting for these Senior Weblos.  We have pinewood derby in February and then Blue and Gold banquet in March.  At Blue and Gold, Rocket will move up to Boy Scouts.  The Weblos held their last flag ceremony.  I can not believe there are 2 more months of cub scouts, that 5 years of cub scouting adventures are coming to an end.
In boy scouts, it is all boy led and I will really not be needed (though there are things I can do for the scout troop).   Rocket knows which troop he wants to go to and I think he will be joining a hew of his friends in the same troop.
I will continue to work with the cub scouts for rechartering each fall and I will help the boy scouts with badge review (or something like that).

Rocket has one more award this year- the Arrow of Light.  I am so proud of his work and effort in scouting.

these boys have formed life long friendships through school, sports and scouting.

the first of 2 games this weekend.  We played the team we played in week 1. the other team won, but we held them close in scoring.

Rocket was in bounding the ball for the first and 3rd quarters. I usually do the score book for the coaches (our team), so I sit up higher and usually have a great view of the game. The boys have put in lots of work this year and you can see the progress they have made from the first practices until now.  I love their coaches.

Have a great day, love and hugs,
Deb
