Spring Gardening

Spring has arrived!!!!!!

The daffodils are blooming behind the knock out roses that need to be trimmed and...... Bug and momma are planting in the garden.

So in reverse order- Bug watering in our onions and potatoes
Planting potatoes- this is my first time planting potatoes - we'll see how it goes. These are red potatoes and they should be ready in the fall- we have eight plants.

He takes his work very seriously. We also planted 18 onion (white and yellow). They will also be ready in the fall. For summer, we will plant some green onions, but those can't be put in until May.

These are 3 gardens- they are each 4x4 and I use the square foot gardening method. each block is 1x1 feet. In one block I can plant: 1 potato, 2 tomatoes, 2 cucumbers, 9 onions, 12 radishes, 4 lettuce or 1 squash plant. So the plan right now is:
garden 1: garden 2 garden 3
8 potatoes 4 tomatoes 2 watermelon
18 onions 18 green onions 2 cucumbers
4 strawberry 24 radishes 24 carrots
2 squash 2 green peppers 1 red pepper, 1 yellow pepper
2 zucchini marigolds (deer repellent) 16 lettuce

I think we should be set for summer veggies

Bug was a great helper- pulling the wagon and opening bags of compost for me

we had to buy10 bags of compost- my compost was not ready

Luckily they all fit in the trunk of the car. And the garden store is only 5 minutes from our house

This what the gardens looked like when we started- I used them to start composting leaves and grass last fall- but we did not have enough to fill the beds and it was not completely composted, so I added the prepared compost this year. Next year, when I add 2 more garden beds, I should have plenty based on how the composting bins look right now.
We are off to take a nap, we worked for 2 hours this morning, had lunch, got a treat. After our nap, we are heading out to the pool for swimming. Mam and Pap are going, so it should be a great time.
Love and hugs,
Deb
